The Grit Pit has officially opened its doors downtown Trenton, offering a safe space for women from all walks of life to come together during their fitness journeys.
“The Grit Pit is all about moms, busy women, mental health, community and fitness mashed into one,” says owner and trainer Tammy J. Girard. “There’s no judgment and a whole lot of respect for any woman that walks through our doors. We are not a big, boxed gym and we take pride in knowing all of our clients. What we offer is a community, everything else is extra.”
Girard, Quinte West resident and Canadian Armed Forces Veteran, started The Grit Pit after going through severe postpartum. She did not have a support group when she was posted to Quinte West seven years ago with her husband and then two-week-old baby.
“After being released from the military in 2019 I decided that this is exactly what I wanted to do. By this time, I had had my second child and I still hadn’t found anything to accommodate my needs. It was an extremely slow process,” says Girard. “Then COVID hit and we had to stop the classes. It’s not until we resumed in 2021 that I realized Quinte West women needed this more than I ever thought.”
Girard received texts, emails and phone calls from women who had attended classes before COVID and were in desperate need of an outlet.
After operating mobile for a period time in parks or out of garages, Girard found that the demand was growing quickly and decided to take the next step of hiring staff and renting a location downtown Trenton. The Grit Pit has a dedicated, compassionate, and relatable team of women offering group fitness classes, weightlifting and yoga.
Located at 84 Dundas St. W. in downtown Trenton, The Grit Pit’s hours of operation vary depending on classes offered, time of the year and programs that are running. To contact Girard or find more information, visit www.thegritpit.info and facebook.com/TheGritPit.
