Quinte West, ON: Morgan Hazelwood is a member of the Canadian Forces who grew up in Peterborough, Ontario and moved to Quinte West in the summer of 2019. Although being a business owner was not always on her radar, Hazelwood knew her love for teaching dance would grow into something more. Hazelwood grew an urge to impact positive change in people’s lives, give back where she could and build something that excited her.
“I had always talked about opening a studio someday, and when I returned to the area I wanted to teach, but just teaching didn’t feel right this time. I had to do more,” said Hazelwood.
Hazelwood looked for space to rent once or twice a week to run classes for a small group of dancers and things started to grow from there. Being a member of the Canadian Forces was the driving force behind opening up her own studio.
“Opening a studio here, near a military base, and hopefully a second and third location down the road that are also near bases, provides a place where dancers and families can feel familiar. When everything is changing around them, they can always find a home at Rebel Dance Co.,” Hazelwood said.
Rebel Dance Company offers a wide variety of classes for kids ages two and up in recreational dance, jazz, tap, ballet, hip-hop, Acrobatic Arts certified acrobatic program, tumbling, hand balancing, musical theatre, family zumba, contemporary, modern, pointe, lyrical, tiny dancers, and circus arts.
For adults, Rebel Dance Co. offers jazz, hip-hop, bollywood, zumba, burlesque, ballet and contemporary. Beyond these dance classes, the studio offers competitive programming and a travel team, who will compete out of Province. Additionally, the studio has an instructor who is qualified in Rhythm Works Integrative Dance, which is a program for children with autism, down syndrome, and other exceptionalities. Bilingual classes are available, and those who feel safer at home can choose to take a virtual class instead.
“If your child wants to dance, send us a message, and we will work it out no matter what. Every child deserves a chance to dance. Inclusive shouldn’t be exclusive,” said Hazelwood.
The hours of operation for Rebel Dance Company are Monday-Friday from 4:30-9:30 p.m., Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and Sundays are open by request for bookings and private lessons. The studio is located at 56 Middle Street in Downtown Trenton. Clients can get in touch by calling the studio at 780-813-0684, emailing at rebel.danceco@gmail.com, or visiting their website: www.rebeldance.net. They can be found on Facebook at @rebeldanceco. Hazelwood said she is excited to welcome dancers, both old and new!
