RE: New Dog Training Facility Specializes in PTSD Service Dogs
Quinte West, ON: Given the increase demand for specialized services in the area for veterans with PTSD and those with mobility issues it is welcome news that a new centre is opening in Trenton that focuses on these issues. Dominium Assistance Dogs is owned and operated by Lisa-Marie Guernon, who also has a second business call Muzzles & Snouts Quinte Dog Training School in Trenton. “We were previously in PEC for the Boarding & Training of cats and dogs,” said Guernon, “but we decided to move to Trenton to better offer the specialized training for Veterans and those with a disability of all sorts.”
The new facility which is located in unit 92, Building 6, 25 Frankford Crescent is wheel chair accessible and family friendly. There is 1500 sq./ft. of space which is suitable for all dog training needs whether family pets or for the specialized training that Dominium Assistance Dogs offers. Their family oriented classes and dog training technique for pets are now accessible to everyone and registration for group classes is now available. Dominium Assistance Dogs is a non-profit organization that facilitates the pairing of Service Dogs and people with a disability. They are a fundraising entity that can facilitate pairing and training of service dogs and canine assistance to promote the awareness of the benefits of canine assistance in mental health recovery. “PTSD Service Dogs for Veterans has been on the loop of Veterans Affairs for a while now,” said Guernon. “I am currently part of the Canadian General Standards Board Committee to help establish the Canadian Standards for all type of Service Dogs.”
Dominium Dogs are individually trained in home setting by volunteers or recipients. The training program itself has been developed by Lisa-Marie Guernon, CPDT-KA, who has been intensively studying PTSD and mobility Service Dogs programs and tasks for the past 2 years, but has experience with PTSD related tasks in dog training for over 6 years. The Dominium Dogs are only available in the Quinte and surrounding area. It takes 9 months for an adult dogs of different breeds to get trained for public access and task training and costs around $3,000 to $5,000. Our breeding program will include only pure breed Labrador retrievers, would be under training for 15 months and would cost approximately $15,000.
