With more than 100 years of providing essential services to homes and businesses, Hydro Ottawa is a company with deep roots in its community. As a good neighbour, Hydro Ottawa is engaged, responsive, willing to lend a hand, and a good environmental steward.
Hydro Ottawa has been nominated as an OBAA finalist for the Skills and Training Award for its proactive approach to ensuring that the company can benefit from a steady supply of apprenticeship candidates to replace its retiring workforce.
According to the company’s analysis, 42% of its overall workforce could potentially retire by 2023–a figure that represents 8,015 years of skills and experience
In response to this challenge, Hydro Ottawa has partnered with Algonquin College on a two-year diploma program to train the next generation of highly-skilled Power Line Technicians. To date, this is the only collaboration of its kind in Ontario, and it is successfully providing Hydro Ottawa with the ability to attract new trades talent and proactively handle demographic shifts, while also benefitting the broader electricity sector.
Over the next five years, Hydro Ottawa plans on continuing to be a leading and trusted integrated utility services company that is committed to creating long-term value in a manner that will withstand the test of public scrutiny and inspire confidence and trust. Their partnership with Algonquin College will continue to strengthen the talent landscape within the energy sector, while ensuring that their own workforce benefits from their work to grow a new generation of Power Line Technicians, who have been trained by some of the very best in the industry.
With a significant portion of their workforce set to retire within the next ten years, Hydro Ottawa recognizes that students and apprentices represent the future of their industry–and they also know that this will be made possible through public/private partnerships.
Hydro Ottawa acknowledges that recruiting, training and developing highly skilled employees is crucial for the delivery of their strategic priorities. As a partner of the Algonquin College two-year diploma program, Hydro Ottawa is in a strong position to continue their efforts to deliver excellent service to their customers while in the midst of a changing environment. The company expects to attract the best and brightest from the local pool of Algonquin College students so that they are well positioned to take on the challenge of passing crucial knowledge and skills from one generation of experienced Powerline Technicians onto the next.
