The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) is the operator of Toronto Pearson International Airport, handling the most airline passengers and cargo traffic of any Canadian airport. In 2013, 36.1 million passengers travelled through Toronto Pearson, making it the second busiest airport in terms of international traffic (international and trans-border) in North America.
Over the past three years the GTAA has focused on providing their employees with the development needed to move forward in both current and future roles. After conducting an internal analysis, the organization determined that their unique and highly specialized skill was at risk. The cause was two fold: a number of employees were approaching retirement, and second education relating to Airport Operations is not widely available within the province’s college and university systems.
The GTAA recognized the need to retain employees, keep employees engaged in the organization, and develop employees for the future roles that may become vacant. The GTAA also identified the need to educate young people and members of the Greater Toronto Area community on the exciting opportunities available at the Airport Authority to help fulfill future roles.
“Many people think of working for an airline when they think of working at the airport, but often members of the public do not understand the role of the Airport Authority and the opportunities they have to offer,” says Howard Eng, President and CEO of the GTAA.
After tackling their immediate skills gap, the organization continued to target their development programs towards future employees. They have established partnerships with Ontario’s Ministry of Education, and continue to participate in community programs involving youth.
The airport itself is a huge generator of economic activity–$35.4 billion to be exact. It employs 1,200 people and is helping Ontarians access the world through a globally connected hub that runs safely, efficiently and with customer service at the forefront.
