Black History Month Spotlight #2 – RJ Skyers
A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of chatting with RJ Skyers. We had met before at one of the @qwchamber Open Houses where he told me about his pet care business @oliandfetch – I couldn’t stop smiling. RJ is like a breath of fresh air. His optimism shines through every word he says. The world definitely needs more RJs.
RJ Skyers’ journey to success is a tale of perseverance, family, and community. Originally from Edmonton, life’s challenges pushed him eastward to Ontario, where he found not only a new home but a sense of purpose. Despite his move, family remains the cornerstone of his foundation, keeping him grounded with unwavering support, encouragement, and wise counsel. Coming from a lineage of successful entrepreneurs, small business is in his blood—it’s the legacy he carries forward.
But why the Quinte Region? For RJ, it’s not about the bustling energy of big cities. It’s the warmth of a welcoming community that drew him in. Here, he’s found the perfect environment to grow his business and connect with customers in meaningful ways. His decision to start his own venture was driven by a desire to offer specialized products that cater to the unique needs of his customers, backed by a level of client service that is second to none.
RJ’s vision goes beyond just selling products—he’s determined to forge strong partnerships with other local businesses across Northumberland, the Quinte Region, and Prince Edward County. These collaborations present exciting opportunities for cross-promotion, creating reciprocal services that elevate the entire community. Being a Black small business owner is a source of pride for RJ, as it allows him to celebrate his individuality and showcase his unique perspective through his personal brand. He views diversity not just as a strength, but as an opportunity to shine in a space where his presence and offerings stand out. It’s this very uniqueness that fuels his passion and drives him to create something truly special.
