Since opening in 1967, George Brown College has evolved to support the labour needs of a variety of sectors and goes beyond pure skills training to offer a broad range of learning opportunities, including soft skills development, extensive field education and applied research.
Since 2004, under current President Anne Sado’s leadership, George Brown has more than doubled in size, broadened its international partnerships and increased its commitment to strengthening the cultural, social and economic fabric of Toronto.
The College is also committed to being a leader in sustainability and has established a triple bottom line for initiatives that are customized for the education sector. Here’s a list of the three E’s that drive their triple bottom line:
- Employers – Meeting Canada’s demand for sustainability – savvy graduates and, as an employer, providing a place of work that attracts and retains the best employees.
- Environment – Transforming the physical space for teaching and learning, minimizing the environmental impacts of facilities, and supporting sustainability practices.
- Economics – Implementing initiatives that are financially feasible and sustainable.
George Brown has embedded sustainability across the organization. They have developed ‘green’ curriculum to produce expertise in fields related to sustainable development, created environmental policies, encouraged inter-professional approaches on sustainability issues and worked to reduce the eco-footprint of its facilities and operations. What’s more, the college’s Green Plan constantly monitors, tracks and improves their environmental initiatives.
Symbolic of this commitment was the 2012 opening of its beautiful Waterfront Campus, which not only provides an outstanding learning environment for students but is also in the process of achieving certification as a LEED gold building.
The college believes in preparing students with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle the challenges of a sustainable society, while enabling them to benefit from the economic opportunities that will arise as a result of solutions they develop and implement.
Inspired by a commitment to achievement through excellence in teaching, applied learning and innovation in sustainability, George Brown College is a key resource in shaping the future of Toronto as a leading global city.
