QUINTE WEST - Giant Tiger is growling with pride over its new store on Dundas Street East in Trenton.
Owner Rod DeGenova is yellow with excitement as the final touches are put on the 19,100 square-foot store for Saturday morning’s official opening.
DeGenova has been with the company for 21 years, seven as owner.
A decision was made in June 2014 to move the store from downtown Trenton to the city’s east end, taking over the former Zellers store location.
“It wasn’t an easy decision. It was a bittersweet decision. But as the market continues to grow and change, we have to be part of that change,” said DeGenova.
Except for the familiar logo above the main entrance, customers won’t recognize what they are walking into Saturday morning.
Staff and management opened the store Friday for a sneak peek for family members and media.
There are new designs, more products and large aisle ways.
“Customers will be amazed at the space and the layout. It’s completely different. We’ve doubled our space,” said DeGenova.
The old store, which closed Wednesday, was cramped for space.
“Much of the product is the same, with many additions, but it’s how it’s displayed that’s really different,” he said.
Work crews had just days to put the finishing touches on the new store.
DeGenova said wall shelving and counters were installed in just two days with merchandise stocked over a 10-day period.
“It’s incredible how it worked and how quickly everything went up and on the shelves,” said DeGenova. “All of our product and merchandising is shown much better. We’ve opened up a lot of space for our customers.”
DeGenova said there’s already a lot of buzz. People have been trying to get into the new store and asking a lot of questions.
When the original Giant Tiger opened in Trenton, DeGenova said people were lined for up blocks. He expects the same for Saturday’s official opening set for 8 a.m.
“We’re all about the community,” said DeGenova.
The new store offers customers a larger ladies and children’s wear sections, a larger home decor space and an enhanced food and frozen product section.
Company spokesperson Rachel Kerr the Trenton redevelopment is part of a nation-wide move to give the 214-store chain a brand new look.
“The goal is to have the every store look like the new Trenton store. The last time I was at the Trenton location the paint was even on the wall. The transformation is amazing,” said Kerr.
Most of the stores in the chain have retail space of between17,000 and 19,000 square-feet.
Kerr said the new store features Giant Tiger’s private food label Giant Value, exclusive to the chain.
Kerr said Giant Tiger in Trenton will continue held local charities. At Saturday’s opening the store will feature a Round Up campaign with proceeds going to the Quinte Humane Society.
